Parties, groups condole Speaker’s death

SHILLONG/TURA: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday condoled the death of Speaker Donkupar Roy.
In a condolence meeting, the MPCC expressed profound grief and sorrow at the sudden passing away of UPD president Roy.
The MPCC recalled its long association with Roy, when the Congress had formed government in the state in alliance with United Democratic Party.
The party while recalling his qualities said that the passing away of Roy has created a huge vacuum in the political and social scenario of Meghalaya, which would be difficult to fill.
“Our deep condolences and we pray to the Almighty to give strength and solace to the bereaved family to bear this untimely and irreparable loss of Roy. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee said.
Meanwhile, Shillong City Mahila Congress has extended condolences to the bereaved family. “May his soul rest in peace. Our prayers are with the family members in this difficult time,” the Mahila Congress said.
Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Meena Kharkongor has sent condolence messages to the wife and the children of Roy.
She said the passing away of the Speaker is a loss to the people of the state.
Meghalaya State Council of Communist Party of India has also mourned the death of Roy.
In a statement, the party said the people of Meghalaya have lost an eminent spokesperson and an able administrator.
“He was a person of academic persuasion having deep knowledge and understanding of the current affairs,” the statement from CPI said.
The Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) said, ”We are saddened by the untimely demise of Roy, Speaker, Meghalaya Assembly.”
The association recalled his commitment through his letter of support to the MSOA and the state government, which was one of the documents necessary for the bid for the Meghalaya National Games, 2022 during his tenure as Leader of Opposition in 2016.
“He will be remembered for his service to the people of the state,” the association’s working president John F Kharshiing said.
The association conveyed condolences to all the family members and prayed to the Almighty to grant the family members strength and solace during this time of great loss.
The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) expressed shock at the death of Roy and said it is a loss to the family members and the state as a whole.
The party extended its condolences to the bereaved family.
NPP Meghalaya State Unit general secretary Kupar Blah also condoled the death of Roy and termed him as a man devoted to serving the people of Shella constituency and Meghalaya.
Frontier Chamber of Commerce said the state has lost a great son in Donkupar Roy who dedicated his entire life for the betterment of the state.
The Achik Citizens Welfare Organisation held a condolence meeting at Shillong and observed two minutes silence to pay respect to the departed soul.
The members expressed gratitude for Roy’s contribution by donating an ambulance to the ACWO during his tenure as chief minister.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) expressed grief at the sudden demise of Roy.
In a statement, the MCTA extended sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family.
“Dr. Donkupar Roy had served as a faculty member in the Department of Economics, Synod College, from 1979 to 1988 following which, he took on the mantle of representing his constituency and served in various capacities in the government.
While in service in Synod College, he was an active member of the MCTA Synod College Unit,” the statement said. As a mark of respect, the various units of the Association and the central body held a condolence meeting on Monday.
“We pray to the Almighty to comfort his family and all his near and dear ones in this moment of grief,” the association said.
Garo Hills mourns Speaker’s death
The NPP in West Garo Hills also expressed deep shock and grief over the untimely demise of UDP Chief Roy.
The party held an emergent meeting at its nodal office in Tura and offered its deepest condolences to Rosemilian Synrem, the wife of the Late leader and other family members.
“We join the bereaved family with our deepest grief and sorrow in this darkest hour. May the Almighty God grant you strength and comfort in your time of grief,” it said in a message to the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, authorities of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) led by CEM Dipul R Marak along with all the members and MDCs have also condoled the death of the late leader.
“Late Dr Roy was not only a successful politician but an able statesman. He was a leader with vision and worked for the welfare and progress of the state as a whole. His premature death is an irreplaceable loss to the people of Meghalaya. We pray that Almighty God shower his blessings upon the family members and give them strength during this time of grief” the condolence message read.
As a mark of respect to the departed soul, a two-minute silence was observed in a condolence meeting held on Monday following which, a half-day holiday was also declared for the employees.
