GUWAHATI: Participants at a round table discussion held under the aegis of Assam Sahitya Sabha here on Sunday appealed to the authorities for re-verification of the names included in the final National Register of Citizens.
The apex literary body of the state organised the round-table conference on “Assam after National Register of Citizens – A Quest for Knowledge” in association with Nanda Talukdar Foundation and Studio Nilima here on Sunday.
Several distinguished personalities and citizens from varied fields participated in the conference and gave their suggestions.
A statement issued here by the Sahitya Sabha said the meeting suggested that re-verification should take place in accordance with the rules and regulations as a “number of Indian citizens have been left out from the final list of NRC while there is an apprehension that the names of many foreigners have been included.”
“Besides, the conference suggested that measures should be immediately taken to include the names of those indigenous people who have been excluded from the list without having to appear before foreigners’ tribunals,” it said.
This was the second part of the round table on NRC after the first held here on August 25.
Participants had then appealed to the civil society to scale up its engagement with the international media to give the right perspective about Assam in the backdrop of the NRC update.
