TURA: A cub belonging to a wild jungle cat species that strayed into human habitation at Jengjal town, 36 km from Tura, was rescued by police after members of the public alerted them on Tuesday afternoon.
The cub was spotted inside a stockpile of firewood next to a field where a football match was being played late in the afternoon.
Locally known as “Menggo Burung” or “Bijare” it is suspected that the animal may have strayed into human habitation in search of food. Rampant poaching of wild cats in the forests of Garo Hills has pushed the species almost to the brink of extinction.
The animal is a smaller species to that of the clouded leopard and grows a little over the size of an adult cat.
