SHILLONG, Nov 18: In view of ransom calls made by miscreants posing as proscribed outfit members to people, demanding money from them, being reported, the Meghalaya Police has issued an advisory against such activity while urging the public not to succumb to the demands rather report about the matter to the force.
“It has been observed that several ransom calls demanding money from individuals have been made by miscreants claiming to be members of proscribed outfits, hence duping people into ceding to such demands and at the same time also creating trepidations among the citizens,” the police said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
It also warned that those that make payments to such individuals will be liable for stringent action as per law.
Information of such calls can be shared to the nearest police station or through social media platforms of the department, the statement said, adding that the identity of the informant will not be disclosed.
