Two held with heroin in WKH
NONGSTOIN, Oct 17: An operation planned by the Anti Narcotic Task Force of Nongstoin has resulted in the arrest of two persons — John Kharbani (30), alias Boro, of Them Iew, New Nongstoin, and Ridonlang L Lyngkhoi (27), alias Deng, of Tiewsaw, Nongstoin — while they were proceeding towards Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, on Sunday evening. West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, HG Lyngdoh, said that around five tins of suspected heroin weighing approximately six grams were seized from their possession.
Ex-Laitumkhrah headman no more
SHILLONG, Oct 17: Former Rangbah Shnong of Laitumkhrah, Barister Myrthong, passed away at Bethany Hospital on Sunday after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. He was a former Headman of Laitumkhrah Durbar and continued to be the Chairman of Lummawrie Local Committee. The funeral service of Myrthong will be held at his residence at 10:30 AM on Sunday. He will be laid to rest at the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Cemetery at Lawjynriew, Nongthymmai.
Free eye screening camps
SHILLONG, Oct 17: Commemorating World Sight Day, observed annually every second Thursday of October, Bansara Eye Care Centre conducted a free diabetes screening & diabetic retinopathy screening recently in collaboration with their partners — Society for Promotion of Eye Care and Sight, Indian Medical Association and All India Ophthalmological Society. Many patients visited the premises of Bansara Eye Care Centre at Laitumkhrah and its vision centres located in Jowai, Nongpoh and Mairang, to undergo free diabetes and diabetic retinopathy screening. To raise awareness about diabetes, pamphlets and brochures containing information about diabetes and diabetic retinopathy were distributed to people visiting the Hospital. A free comprehensive eye screening camp was also organized by Bansara Eye Care Centre in all of its Vision Centres located at Smit, Mawkhar, Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat, Nongpoh, Mairang, Nongstoin, Khliehriat and Jowai with support from its collaborating partners. Many patients visited the Vision Centres to avail the free eye screening service. The centre also conducted another free eye screening camp in collaboration with Mawlai Phudmuri District which was held at Mawlai Motsyiar for the people of Mawlai and its adjoining areas.
WKH chess body gets office-bearers
NONGSTOIN, Oct 17: The West Khasi Hills District Chess Association has elected its office-bearers for 2021-24 in an election held at Nongstoin. The office-bearers are Richard Sun as president, Pearlee Syiem as vice president, Bonney Kharbani as secretary, Elishon Kharbani as joint secretary, Spaisingh Kurbah as treasurer, Ronalwanbor Lyngkhoi as organising secretary among 20 other members. The association has also decided to the 8th State B WKH Chess Tournament 2021 for Open and Students category in Nongstoin on December 16 this year as part of the death anniversary of U Soso Tham.
Village gets internet connection
SHILLONG, Oct 17: A few taps on the keyboard and the secondary school at Mawkynsah village can now benefit from various e-learning initiatives of the Government of India. Such is the magic of internet connectivity that it brings people closer not only to their known ones, but also to myriad communities and resources. As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Department of Telecom North-East LSA inaugurated the BharatNet site at Mawkynsah village in West Khasi Hills. Headmaster Brailian Lyngdoh expressed his happiness while stating that the high-speed internet connectivity would be helpful for the school students. Village Headman Banteilang Lyngdoh and Secretary Pynshainlang Nongrang also attended the event along with other people from the village.
