NONGSTOIN, Nov 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday announced Rs. 13 crore special package for development of tourism infrastructure and amenities at Nongkhnum Island in West Khasi Hills.
Nongkhnum is known as the second largest River Island in Asia after Majuli in Assam. He visited the Island with his family accompanied by District Administration officials.
The Chief Minister announced the tourism packages of Rs. 13 Cr to develop Nongkhnum on the sideline of the programme held at Nongstoin.
Earlier, the Chief Minister along with his family has visited Nongkhnum River Island where the beauty of Nongkhnum which was left unattended for many decades compelled him to focus and beautify the tourist destination in West Khasi Hills.
The RS 13 crore packages will be sanctioned through New Development Bank, the largest international bank formed by BRICS countries where the NDB has funded over Rs 700 crores for Tourism Development in Meghalaya and Rs 13 crores out of Rs 700 will be sanctioned to develop the tourism in Nongkhnum.
He also took the opportunity to inform the gathering that the Government has accorded thrust to ensure that road connectivity in the district is improved. He also said that the Greater Nongstoin Water Supply Scheme is nearing completion and will be inaugurated soon.
During his day-long visit to the district, the Chief Minister also inspected the Nongstoin – Wahkaji which has been in dilapidated condition for many years. The road has been tendered under SARDP-NE at a cost of Rs 302 Cr but it was yet started.
The Chief Minister also inspected the road condition where he has directed the Contractor to start the work immediately and the Contractor has agreed to begin the project within 10 to 15 days.
