KHLIEHRIAT, Aug 10: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the East Jaintia Hills District Administration on Wednesday jointly organised a sensitisation programme against child trafficking.
The programme, which was held as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, was organised in a bid to disseminate awareness on basic indicators to identify children at risk, vulnerable children, et al.
The programme was attended by officials from the Police department, NCPCR, District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committee, Juvenile Justice Board, in-charges of Special Juvenile Police Unit and Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, among others.
East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner A Baranwal, in his address, stressed on the need to raise awareness against child trafficking, child labour and similar practices that are in violation of child rights.
The DC also assured that a consultative effort will be initiated by bringing on board all the stakeholders to ensure that no child is trafficked to or from the district.
“We also need to address the broader issue of child labour, school dropouts and everything that pertains to child rights. If we analyse these issues in their broad perspective, they all relate to poverty,” he said.
