NONGPOH, July 1: The Ri-Bhoi Police, under the leadership of Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad on Saturday carried out an operation and successfully confiscated contraband items worth Rs. five crore. Three people were also arrested in this connection.
Following a tip-off, police set up a naka on the Umsning Bypass junction on NH6 and subsequently intercepted a vehicle (ML05K 0314)
Upon questioning, the occupants, who identified themselves as Ronand Kyndiah and Daniel Syiem from Shillong, refused to disclose the location of drugs, leading to their subsequent detention for further interrogation.
It was after this the duo informed that another person, viz. Naba Singh, was involved in the drug transaction and was headed towards Guwahati.
Following the revelation, another naka was set up near the Byrnihat Outpost following which Singh was detained.
Later, the trio informed that the drugs were located inside a farmhouse in Lumkeni Village, Umran.
On receipt of the information, Ri-Bhoi Police and the K9 Dog Squad of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a thorough search at the aforesaid farmhouse.
It was after this an iron box containing 70 soap boxes was recovered.
Inside the soap boxes was orange powder, which tested positive for heroin.
In addition to the drugs, the market value of which is estimated at Rs five crore, a vehicle and four mobile phones were also confiscated.
Meanwhile, Ronand Kyndiah and Daniel Syiem, both residents of Lower Mawprem, Shillong, as well as Thokchom Naba Singh, a resident of Kangmong village, Manipur, have been arrested.
Meanwhile, an elated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, taking to Twitter, said, “Traffickers plan to torment society by drugs but our government is firm to thwart their evil designs. In an intensive operation, Ri Bhoi Police nabbed 3 notorious traffickers and seized heroin worth Rs 5 crore & Alto car at Lumkeni with the help of K9 squad. Kudos to team.”
