TURA, July 17: TMC youth leader Richard Marak on Monday termed the neglect of the Labour Corps Day in Tura as a tragedy that undermined the memory of the brave Garo men who fought and died for the nation.
“As the idiom goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind,’ and it is disheartening to see the fading significance of this historical event. There are no official celebrations, no memorial service, and the absence of salutations by the police department. We must not forget the brave Garo men who fought and died for our nation, and we must honor their legacy by reinstating the formal celebrations, memorial services, and police department salutations. The government and authorities must take action to ensure that this important day is given the recognition it deserves,” Marak said.
The TMC youth leader pointed out that the Garo men, even though they were not trained soldiers, stepped forward to serve their country and contribute to the Allied forces’ cause.
“They were involved in constructing roads and carrying goods, which may have seemed like small tasks in comparison to the overall war effort, but their sacrifice was immense. They left their families and homes, ventured into foreign lands, and faced unimaginable hardships on the frontlines. Their commitment and bravery deserve to be honored and remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude,” Marak felt.
The TMC leader called on the government and authorities to take immediate action to reinstate the formal celebrations, memorial services, and police department salutations while at the same time, urging the community to come together and demand that the important day is given the recognition it deserves.
