SHILLONG, Feb 29: Construction of a small but important road to connect Rilbong with Umshyrpi bridge is set to begin in a few weeks.
South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday said that the PWD has already paid a premium of Rs 1.69 lakh to the defence authorities for giving away their land spanning 25,000 square feet for the road project.
“The work will start in a few weeks’ time,” Shullai said, while adding that the project finally received necessary approvals after he raised the matter with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who agreed to part with the land for the benefit of the people.
Initially, the work on the road, which is to be used only by light motor vehicles, would start from Umshyrpi bridge.
The road would connect Rilbong and Umshyrpi bridge as people who intend to come to the main road at present have to ply through Zigzag Road, Rhino Point, Anjalee point before reaching the MES point.
