SHILLONG, April 24: With the monsoon season fast approaching Meghalaya, the state government has begun taking precautionary measures to minimise the loss of life and property during this period.
It is pertinent to note that monsoon in the state often brings harsh weather conditions, including floods, landslides, drowning incidents and waterlogging in various parts.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Thursday informed that officials are already at work and the department has started implementing necessary precautions.
“We need to remain alert as natural calamities often wreak havoc in the state,” he said.
He assured that the government will make every effort to provide timely assistance to those in need and called for public cooperation in managing such situations.
Last year, at least 15 people lost their lives due to floods and landslides, while cyclones also caused  widespread destruction across the state.
