SHILLONG, June 29: The first package of the Shillong-Dawki road project, which involves construction of a four-lane road from Rilbong to Baniun in Upper Shillong, is making steady progress and is expected to be completed within December this year.
“The current status of the project is very good. As far as package one is concerned, if everything goes well we should be able to complete it by December this year,” Deputy Chief Minister in charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong said on Sunday.
The 11.6 km-long four-lane road is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 351.12 crore. The project has faced delays, including issues with land acquisition and utility shifting.
The project also includes bypasses and underpasses designed to divert traffic away from congested market areas.
Initially, the plan was to extend the road to Anjalee Point with an overpass.
However, the stretch from Rilbong to Anjalee Point has now been excluded, and the road will terminate at Rilbong instead. The overpass construction is expected to be taken up later, with plans to extend it to Barik.
