Aizawl: A heart patient from Mizoram, who underwent stent angioplasty at the age of 94, cut his 101st birthday cake on Tuesday.

V L Bela, who had undergone angioplasty in 2005 at the B M Birla Heart Research Centre(BMBHRC) in Kolkata to remove a 70-80 per cent blockage in one of the major coronary arteries, is not only the oldest heart patient in India but also the longest surviving one.

The retired primary school teacher, who now lives at Tuikual here, had created a medical history by undergoing stent angioplasty at Kolkata at the age of 94 to become the oldest man in the world to survive stent angioplasty.

Dr Tarun Praharaj, director of Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory and senior interventional cardiologist at BMBHRC, who was behind the success of the rather complex procedure, found Bela to be in excellent condition when he visited the centenarian on his birthday last month.

Praharaj stated, ”I have not come across any medical literature where angioplasty was done on a patient at such an advanced age in India. So he is probably the oldest patient in India to undergo the process and this has been one of the longest follow-up of a patient leading a normal life even at the age of hundred.”

His family members said even after six years of surgery, Bela is active and able to walk around and conduct some basic chores, though he no longer goes regularly to church as he has been advised not to climb stairs.

”In case of Bela, I can say his stress level was very low and he had a good dietary habit comprising mainly boiled food. He also underwent regular medical check-ups and took medicines regularly. But genetic factors may also be involved,” Praharaj said.

Although stent angioplasty of coronary arteries at above 80 years of age are known to cause acute cardiac and non-cardiac complications, like renal failure and bleeding, ultimately resulting in death, a team under Praharaj went ahead with the stent angioplasty and cleared the blockade. (UNI)

Commissioning of Umngot water supply scheme to take time

0

From Our Correspondent

JOWAI: The most awaited centrally sponsored river pumping water supply scheme for Jowai town from river Umngot might take time to be commissioned though officials of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) claim that it would be commissioned by March next year.

With a view to meet the water demands of Jowai town and its surrounding villages including Mihmyntdu and Ialong villages, the PHE Department started the project in 2004-05 and the water project was sanctioned under NLCPR by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India in 2002.

This scribe paid a visit to the project site on Tuesday and found that the intake tower has been raised and if the work goes on smoothly, it will take another three to four months to be completed.

It may be also mentioned here that concerned residents of Jowai including Sajeki Passah, HH Mohrmen, Ch. Passah and Michael Buam recently filed a writ petition in the High Court against the PHE Department for slow progress of construction work and delay in the project. The case is still going on in the Court.

Speaking to some of the PHE officials here in Jowai, it was learnt that the concerned department has set a target of March 2012 to commission the project.

“The progress of work is in full swing as we have already raised the intake tower and floor leveling is under progress”, said an official.

He also informed that last month, the work was stopped for two weeks due to some illegal activities by some labourers working there.

Sources also informed that a meeting attended by MLAs, MP and PHE officials held recently at Polo Tower discussed the issue and a deadline for March 2012 was fixed for commissioning the water project.

State police constables not happy with steps taken for promotion

0

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya police constables have expressed their dissatisfaction and frustration on the steps being taken by the IGPs/ADGPs/DGP for promotion. The constables allege that this has happened due to regular changes in the promotion policy with the changes of leadership (IGP/ADGP/DGP) in the department.

Since 1997, no constables are promoted to the rank of officers like ASI, SI etc. The constables allege that last time it was in 2001, when the then IGP (TAP) R Mehta and the present ADGP had declared the name of 144 constables to appear for promotion examination at PTS but that never materialized due to involvement of senior officers in “Ill practice” for which the department abolished the post of ASI.

Again in 2007, Anil Pradhan called the name of only graduate constables to appear for limited departmental promotion examination which took a backseat, too as he was removed from Meghalaya Police due to his involvement in the infamous jailbreak case.

This was the time when some undergraduate US / constables came forward to express their dissatisfaction and frustration.

The constables allege that the present ADGP (TAP) vide Message No. TAP/F-227/2/3730-3731 dated September 13, 2011 has called nomination of only graduate constables.

This move of the ADGP (TAP), the constables allege, will affect their regular duties and will promote indiscipline within the constabulary.

This has already affected the department after the elimination of ASI posts and with the implementation of cadre course, the constables allege that some inspectors have even filed court cases, too.

Due to this, there is large-scale indiscipline seen today among police personnel on the roads and elsewhere.
