ACCI demands inquiry to assess losses

0

Itanagar: Taking exception to the damages caused to a number of business establishments in the Capital Complex during Tuesday’s 12-hour Papum Pare district bandh, the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce & Industries on Thursday condemned the anti-socials for their mindless acts.

In a release here ACCI particularly condemned the loot of valuable merchandise from BB Plaza here, causing huge losses to a number of unemployed local youths who had set up shops on loans from banks and other central government schemes including PMEGP.

It further pointed out that the traders stand up for genuine causes of the people of the state and donate generously to numerous organizations. But such vindictive attitude towards the business men would spread fear psychosis among them discouraging them to run their shops while sending a wrong message to outside investors. The ACCI said the state government ‘completely failed’ in providing security and safety to the traders and their establishments during any agitation.

”Interestingly, the traders down their shutters during all bandhs out of compulsion to save their establishments but they are the first to be victimized for none of their fault and suffer huge losses,” the ACCI said.

It demanded a proper inquiry to asses the total losses caused by vandalism and adequate compensation be paid immediately to the traders. (UNI)

Mime play on Sharmila draws crowd in SKorea

Kolkata: A mime play portraying ‘Iron Lady’ Irom Chanu Sharmila’s 11-year-long hunger strike demanding repeal of the ‘draconian’ Armed Forces Special Powers Act has drawn applause at an international theatre festival in South Korea.

The one-hour stage drama Mirel Masingkha or ‘The will of soul’, based on Sharmila’s lone struggle, was showcased at the Chuncheon Festival in the South Korean city of Gwangju last week in homage to the victims of the 1980 Gwangju massacre by a military dictator.

A 15-member team of Imphal’s Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory presented the non-verbal play which was an instant hit as it struck a common chord with the Koreans.

“Our play reflects the atrocities in Manipur by the Indian military forces.

This is similar to the oppression under Chun Doo-hwan’s military dictatorship in Gwangju during the 80’s,” the play’s director, Dr Sadananda Singh, told PTI from Imphal.

Incidentally, Sharmila, who is forcibly nose-fed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal since November 2000, had won the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights in 2007.

“The success of the play was sealed when the audience and press barged into the green room after the performance. Someone from the audience came up and admitted that he cried while watching. He said Koreans share our pain as they had also suffered similarly 30 years ago,” Singh said.

Venerating the unrelenting spirit of the 39-year-old civil rights activist through gestures, facial expressions and other body motions, the silent play is also an effort to garner international support for Sharmila’s fight against AFSPA.

“As artists it is our duty to reflect what is going on in our society and take up issues of social importance.

This play is our contribution to Sharmila’s cause which is also the cause of all Manipuris,” the veteran mime artist said. Sharmila’s non-violent resistance has become a nucleus for collective protest against the AFSPA, under which the security forces can even kill people without fearing prosecution.

Earlier, the Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory had presented the play ‘Power’s Act’, based on a woman tortured by the Army.

Established in the year 1987, the mime group has participated in a number of international festivals like the International Puppet and Mime Festival of Kilkis in Greece and International Festival of Mime and Physical Theatre held at Macedonia. (PTI)

Kohima: The Nagaland government has said it has come to its knowledge that a large number of representations were being received from many NGOs and agencies on service matters of individual officers, particularly with regard to out-of-turn promotions and upgradation and in the matters of posting and transfer. According to an office memorandum here today in some cases, the government said the representations express ‘genuine aspirations’ of the people. However, in most cases it was catering to individual interests of officers or NGOs and agencies. ‘I was more surprised than hurt’

0

NEW DELHI: Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh says he was more surprised than hurt when he was axed from the Indian ODI team for the first two ODIs against England.

“I wouldn’t say I was hurt. I was more surprised. I wish the younger guys all the best. I am more than happy to share my experience with them like I was helped by Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly while I was coming up,” Harbhajan said on Wednesday.

Dropped following a lacklustre tour of England, Harbhajan said that despite not being a part of Indian side, he would like to see his teammates take revenge over England in the five-match series, starting on Friday in Hyderabad.

England recently blanked India 0-4 in the Test series before inflicting a humiliating 0-3 defeat in the five-match one-day series at their backyard.

Harbhajan, on his part had a dismal show, as he took only two wickets in 69.4 overs at an average of 143.50 and economy rate of 4.11 before he suffered a stomach injury during the second game and was ruled out for the rest of the tour.

“Harbhajan Singh is immaterial. What is important is India must beat England in the five-match ODI series and take their revenge, which I am sure they would over the next two weeks,” he said.

“Ultimately, we are all playing for the country. We all are looking to exact revenge against a team who were so good against us recently,” he added.

The feisty spinner also said that India’s defeat in England hurt him more than his own omission and it continues to be a recurring nightmare for him.

“It took a lot of hard work for us to reach to the top. And we wouldn’t rest till we wrest it back. We won’t rest..,” he said.

Critics in recent times have found fault with Harbhajan’s bowling, saying it was not penetrative enough but the bowler begged to differ.

“First of all you must decide what you expect from a bowler in limited overs format. Do you expect him to take a five-for everytime he bowls his 10 overs or do you want him to put the squeeze on and force the opposition to play into your hands?,” asked Harbhajan.

In the 17 ODIs this year, the 31-year-old spinner barely conceded over four runs an over during the tours of South Africa and West Indies and in the World Cup.

“In the Caribbean, I took one for 24 from 10 overs, besides scoring 41 with the bat in Antigua to clinch the one-day series. I must have done something right to have survived for 13 years. Who can be more concerned about my performance than myself?” he said.

“I would do what my team wants me to do. I can’t keep adjusting every time somebody fancies to write about me.” (PTI)

CAB on sticky wicket over India-England match

0

Kolkata: The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which is awaiting the public works department’s (PWD) no-objection certificate (NOC) to host the India-England One-Day International cricket match at the Eden Gardens ground Oct 25, Wednesday dubbed the clearance procedure as “clumsy” and sought support from the state government.

“Kolkata (Eden Gardens) is slated to host several international cricket matches. We are looking for the support from the government. We are following the due procedures and visiting various offices as and when required. But we think there is no need to make the formalities so clumsy. Making them a bit simpler would be appreciated,” CAB joint secretary Biswarup Dey told mediapersons here.

A section of the media Tuesday reported that the department had denied the NOC to the CAB for the Oct 25 match.

“It has not been denied. Earlier, we got the NOC during the World Cup matches organised here. An NOC is valid for one year so where is the need for another one?” Dey asked.

PWD Minister Subrata Bakshi, when asked about the matter, told IANS: “I am not the one concerned to answer this.”

The Eden Gardens was earlier prevented from hosting a World Cup match due to non-completion of renovation work in time. (IANS)

ICC gives clean chit to Australian players

0

MELBOURNE: An ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) officer has rubbished alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed’s claim that Australian cricketers were involved in match-fixing, saying the world body had “no evidence” of any wrongdoings carried out by the Aussies.

According to a report in ‘The Australian’, former Scotland Yard police officer, Alan Peacock, who has been with the ICC’s ACSU since its inception in September 2000, insited at the Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, that there was no evidence of corruption against Australian cricketers.

“We have no evidence that the Australians have committed 10 brackets a day, or any brackets,” Peacock said when Salman Butt’s legal team asked a question as to whether he had evidence that Australian players fix matches. “Presumably the brackets he (Majeed) is talking about is what we call session betting. That involved betting on the runs and wickets scored within a single session of play or a specific number of overs,” he said.

Majeed, a players’ agent who was caught in a sting operation for allegedly orgainising corruption in cricket matches, has claimed that he knew several international players and that Australians were “the biggest” offenders of match-fixing. Cricket Australia also strongly reacted to the allegations and termed the claims as “outlandish”. (PTI)
