SHILLONG: Amita Sangma, one of the victims of brutal assault by coal dealers, has reiterated the demand for CBI probe instead of judicial inquiry into the November 8 incident.
Amita said on Wednesday that the CBI probe will culminate in filing charge-sheet against the accused whereas judicial inquiries had resulted in filing reports with no tangible results.
The NPP-led MDA government has rejected the plea of the opposition Congress to hand over the probe to CBI during the special session on Tuesday.
No lookout notice
She also alleged that police know the whereabouts of NPP leader Nidamon Chullet, the prime accused, and others who are absconding but are not acting since there is a nexus. Moreover, there was no lookout notice issued with adequate compensation for people to provide information about the accused.
“I want to know why the police cannot take action against the prime accused and it was the police personnel who had informed the attackers about our presence in Sohshrieh,” she said.
Constable at Ladrymbai
on leave
Amita also questioned as to what made the police to ask a constable at Ladrymbai police outpost to take leave following the assault.
The Assembly Committee led by Ampareen Lyngdoh in its report had also mentioned that the two victims had tea at Ladrymbai police outpost with a constable named Sangma, but he took leave immediately after the incident.
Sources said the accused may have landed in Chennai or Nepal as it was when Showmewell Kyndait, his brother-in-law was planning to board a flight from Guwahati airport that he was arrested.
Sources said one of the arrested accused in the assault case, Hamlen Rymbai, is close to both the SP and the DC of East Jaintia Hills.
No reshuffle in EJH
Though the incident has exposed the alleged inefficiency of the district administration and the police, the sources said the government has not effected any replacement of DC and SP in the district and besides the same police officers are manning the Ladrymbai police out post. Curiously, the inquiry officer is also from East Jainta Hills.
Activists close to Agnes said police had not even formed any Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising police officers not posted in Jaintia Hills to probe the incident.
Security plea rejected
According to sources, the victims were provided with security when they checked the coal-laden trucks in Mawiong prior to the incident in East Jaintia Hills. Though both Agnes and Amita had requested the police in Ladrymbai outpost to send police personnel to accompany them to Sohshrieh, the police did not provide any security, sources added.
