NONGSTOIN, Sep 15: Police have arrested three persons who were allegedly planning to sell PDS rice at a marketplace within Mairang.
In a statement, West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert G Lyngdoh said that information was received from SI Supply Branch (Mairang), M Marbaniang, that one truck (AS17B3791) carrying rice gunnies with PDS tags on them was detected at Pyndengumiong, Mairang.
“The officers of Supply Branch found that the rice bags did not belong to any of the Government PDS wholesalers of Mairang Sub-Division and suspected that the rice bags were planned to be sold in the open market,” the statement said.
Following the tip-off, a team form Mairang Police Station was dispatched to the location and, during inquiry, it was found that the vehicle was loaded with 200 FCI rice gunnies of 50 kg each, which were eventually confiscated along with the vehicle.
“It was learnt that the rice bags were to be sold in the market within Mairang and in the process the identification of the shops purchasing the rice is being investigated,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, three persons viz. Mohendro Barman, Nirmal Das and Budeswar Hazarika have been arrested in this connection.
