Just a click on a link cause 40 people loose lakhs; beware of online fraud

Shillong, March 6: It was just a click on a link that caused 40 customers of a bank in Mumbai loose lakhs.

The victims of online fraud had clicked on a link sent to them asking for up-gradation of Know Your Customer (KYC) and PAN details via a fake message.

After the case came to the light of police, they issued an advisory asking the people not to click on suspicious links sent from dubious numbers.

Fraudsters send such phishing links to the customers stating that their bank account is blocked for not updating their KYC/ PAN card details, according to the advisory.

Customers are taken to a fake website where they are asked to enter their customer ID and password which is accessible to the fraudsters. As soon as a person enters the details, the fraudsters go to the bank site and use same details to enter the account of the victim and transfer money to their own account.

40 victims of this online fraud included a TV actor Shweta Memon who lodged a formal complaint with the police claiming that she was duped of money. She lost Rs Rs 57,636 in the fraud.
