SHILLONG, Feb 25: Independent candidate Lurshai Kharbani who won the MDC election from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency has been directed to refrain from supporting the VPP Executive Committee in the KHADC, local MLA Remington Gabil Momin said on Tuesday.
“I have made it very clear that he (Kharbani) will not support the VPP Executive Committee (EC),” Momin said.
He also stated that he has directed Kharbani, as an independent MDC, to align with coalition partners in the NPP-led MDA in the KHADC.
It may be noted that Kharbani won from Rambrai-Jyrngam by defeating NPP candidate and former MLA Kimfa Sydney Marbaniang by 2,154 votes.
Speaking to reporters, Momin said that voters were not focused on the candidate alone but instead cast their votes in his favour based on broader considerations. According to him, he received the support of 6,000 Garo voters and over 4,000 Khasi voters in this MDC election.
When asked whether this election result would strengthen his chances of re-election as an MLA in 2028, Momin said he does not speculate on future outcomes. Instead, his priority remains serving the people to the best of his ability.
